The 1840 sale of the Sun Inn in Grope Lane
This is an indenture dated 23 December 1840, for the sale of a property in Grope Lane (today's Wine Street) - the Sun Inn.
This Indenture
made the twenty
third day of

Thomas Lemon of
Stalbridge in
the county of
Dorset Mason and
Samuel Dean of
Yeovil in the
county of
Somerset
blacksmith of
the one part and
William Bide of
Yeovil aforesaid
glove
manufacturer of
the other part
Witnesseth
that for and in
consideration of
the sum of five
shillings
sterling money
to each of them
the said Thomas
Lemon and Samuel
Dean at or
before the
sealing and
delivery of
these presents
paid by the said
William Bide the
receipts whereof
respectively are
hereby
acknowledged
They the said
Thomas Lemon and
Samuel Dean
Have and
each of them
Hath
bargained and
sold and by
these presents
Do and
each of them
Doth bargain
and sell unto
the said William
Bide his
executors
administrators
and assigns All
that messuage or
dwellinghouse
burgage and Inn
commonly called
or known by the
name or sign of
The Sun situate
lying and being
in Grope Lane
within the
parish of Yeovil
aforesaid
heretofore in
the possession
of Lionel Farley
afterwards of
Sarah Leverage
after that of
Mary Nossiter
then of Henry
Lillington then
of Edmund Batten
since of John
Batten and now
of the said
Samuel Dean or
their respective
tenants Together
with all houses
outhouses
edifices
buildings stable
cellars court
yards ways paths
passages wells
springs drains
waters
watercourses
easements
profits
advantages and
appurtenances
whatsoever to
the said
messuage or
dwellinghouse
and
hereditaments
hereby bargained
and sold or
intended so to
be or any part
thereof
belonging or
appertaining And
the reversion
and reversions
remainder and
remainders
yearly and other
rents issues and
profits thereof
To have and
to hold the
said messuage or
dwellinghouse
burgage and Inn
and all and
singular other
the
hereditaments
and premises
hereinbefore
described and
hereby bargained
and sold or
intended so to
be and every
part and parcel
thereof with
their and every
of their rights
members and
appurtenances
unto the said
William Bide his
executors
administrators
and assigns from
the day next
before the day
of the date of
these presents
for and during
and unto the
full end and
term of one year
from thence next
ensuing and
fully to be
complete and
ended
Yielding and
paying
therefore the
rent of a
peppercorn on
the last day of
the said term
(if the same
shall be
lawfully
demanded) To the
intent and
purpose that by
virtue of these
presents and by
force of the
statute of uses
the said William
Bide may be put
into and be in
the full and
actual
possession of
all and singular
the said
messuage or
dwellinghouse
hereditaments
and premises
hereby bargained
and sold or
intended so to
be and be
thereby enabled
to accept and
take a Release
and Conveyance
of the Reversion
and Inheritance
thereof unto the
said William
Bide his heirs

proper use and
behoof of him

Indenture of
Release and
Appointment
already prepared
