Sidney charles burt

Small-time Glove Manufacturer of Vicarage Street

Sydney Charles Burt was born at Long Load near Martock in 1850, the son of Uriah Burt and his wife Ann and in the 1851 census commercial traveller Uriah was listed living there with an two daughters baby son Sydney Charles and a house servant. By 1861 the family had moved to Yeovil and were living at 72 Hendford opposite Chant's Path. Uriah described his occupation as commercial traveller for timber & general merchant. Sydney, now aged 11 was a scholar. In the 1871 census Uriah now listed himself as a coal merchant and Sidney, now aged 21, gave his occupation as glove manufacturer. In 1875 Sydney Charles Burt was listed as a glove manufacturer of Vicarage Street in the Post Office directory of that year.

In the summer of 1878 Sidney married Eliza Dixon at Kensington, London. Clearly Sidney Burt was not a premier league glove manufacturer since by 1881 he was working as a railway agent and living in Dorchester with Eliza, their two children and three servants. By 1911 the family had moved to Weston-super-Mare where Sydney continue to work as an agent for a railway company.

Sydney Burt died in 1929 at Maidenhead, Berkshire.
