Edward Giles Hussey

Horse Dealer and Trainer of the Huish Stables

Edward Giles Hussey (also recorded as Giles Edward) was born at Nash Court, Marnhull, Dorset in 1828. He was one of the six children of Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset, magistrate, landowner and gentleman John Hussey (1795-1880) and his second wife Christina Mary Elizabeth née Arundel (1798-1872). John and Christina's children were; Mary (1820-1901), Agnes Mary Margaret (1823-1901), Maria Louisa (1825-1914), Edward, Reginald Raymond Francis (1833-1866) and Hubert Edward (1836-1894).

I couldn't find Edward in the 1841 census as he was probably at boarding school.

On 14 January 1851 at Marnhull parish church, Edward married Dorothea Mary Nichol (1826-1900), known as Mary. Edward and Mary were to have five children; John Giles (b1853), Edward Giles (b1855), Donald (b1856), Grace Mary (1858-1935) and Margaret Ann (1861-1862). In the 1851 census, the newlywed Edward and Mary were listed living with Edward's family at Nash Court. Edward gave his occupation as a farmer of 100 acres, employing 11 labourers.

In the 1861 census, Edward and his family were listed at Buckshams, Holwell, Dorset, together with three visitors and four servants - including two house servants and a stable & horse servant. Edward gave his occupation as a landed proprietor.

By 1871 Edward had moved his family to Yeovil and the census listed them at Townsend. Of the children, only John, Donald and Grace were listed, together with Mary's sister Camilla Peacock. Edward, by now aged 45, gave his occupation as a dealer in horses. In the 3 January 1879 edition of the Western Gazette, Edward announced that his son, Donald, would be taking over the business, although this arrangement clearly didn't last long.

By the time of the 1881 census, Edward, Mary, Grace and Camilla were living in Market Street. Edward gave his occupation as a horse dealer employing one man and a boy.

In the 1891 census, Edward was listed on his own at the Tower Street stables, Bishops Hull, near Taunton. His occupation is almost illegible, but looks like horse trainer of Yarl (Yeovil ?).

In February 1900, at the age of 74, Mary died in Yeovil and was buried on 22 February 1900 in Yeovil cemetery. The address given in the burial register was 57 Huish. The 1901 census recorded Edward as a 73-year-old widower, living on his own at 57 Huish. He gave his occupation as a horse trainer. In the 1911 census Edward was recorded as a boarder with James and Sarah Gould at 9 Market Street. Edward gave his occupation as a retired colt breaker.

Edward Hussey died on 5 June 1914, aged 87. He was buried in Yeovil cemetery and his burial was recorded in St John's parish register. His will was proved at Taunton in June and his effects were valued at £74 0s 2d (about £7,000 at today's value).

Presumably taking over the reins (my joke - get it?) of the business again, Edward placed this advertisement in the 5 March 1880 edition of the Western Gazette.
