Smoke Acre Orchard

Smoke Acre Orchard

An orchard of Marsh Hill Farm

Smoke Acre Orchard (Parcel 1113) was a small orchard of Marsh Hill Farm (today's Smoke Acre Farm), Yeovil Marsh. 'Smoke Acre' is thought to have been land on which the rendering of tithe-wood (a tax for the support of the Church and clergy) was replaced by the payment of money - possibly so-called because the tithe-wood would have 'gone up in smoke'.

The 1846 Tithe Apportionment recorded that Smoke Acre Orchard was owned by Yeovil solicitor William Lambert White and let to James Pope. Pope also farmed the adjoining Pear Tree Farm. Smoke Acre Orchard was described as an orchard and measured 6a 1r 20p.

In August 1884 Marsh Hill Farm, including Smoke Acre Orchard, was sold to a Mr Legg. The new tenant was John Trent - who quit the farm in November 1885. The following tenant farmer was a Mr Mead, followed by John Pearce in the latter part of the 1890s and in to the 1900s. During the early 1920s, Marsh Hill Farm was farmed by Mr F R Rendell, who quit the farm in December 1928.

Smoke Acre Orchard (Parcel 1113) was bounded on the west by Summerleaze (Parcel 1114), to the north by Marsh Hill Farm's farmhouse and orchard (Parcel 1112), to the west by Lower Sleight (Parcel 1106) and to the south by Coppice (1) (Parcel 1102), West Leaze (Parcel 1103) and Plantation (Parcel 1104).
