An early school for young ladies

The Penn Hill Boarding School was in South Street, on the corner with Penn Hill.

From the 1841 census it would appear that this was a boarding school for young ladies. It was run by artist George Custard and his wife Ann. Living there, apart from the Custards and their two young daughters, were two young lady teachers, two servants and twelve boarding students, all girls aged between 10 and 16.
