golden compass
South Street
The Golden Compass was an early, but short-lived, beerhouse in South Street with only two references but, since it was a named establishment, I have given it its own page.
Edward Coleman was born in Milborne Port, Somerset around 1786 and was the only listed licensee of the Golden Compass. He may have set up the establishment in the mid-1830's but is only named in 1840. However he appears to have always lived in Bond Street - he was listed in the 1832 poll book by virtue of owning his freehold house in Bond Street and in the 1841 census 1841 he was listed as a tailor living in Bond Street with his Yeovil-born wife, Ann, and daughters Adelaide and Sarah. His trade was again given as tailor in the 1851 census and Edward and Ann were still living in Bond Street in 1851 with their granddaughter, Louisa. Edward died in Yeovil in 1854.
